About five miles from Washington, across US 211 and south down Route 626, or what is commonly known as Tiger Valley Road, one can find nestled up in the foothills of Long Mountain the Mt. Salem Baptist Church. Known as the “Mother of all Baptist Churches in Rappahannock County,” Mt. Salem Church is now a national landmark.
Under the leadership of its long time pastor, Rev. Barnett Grimsley, a Baptist Church \vas established in the new county seat of Washington. Through the assistance of Miss Mary Long, a member of Mt. Salem Baptist Church, a building was erected in 1875 and the Washington Baptist Church was constituted in 1882.
After many years of dedicated service to the town of Washington and the people of Rappahannock County and beyond, Washington Baptist Church once again is expanding to enhance its ministry. A new Fellowship Hall and Education Building will be dedicated on Sunday, June 4, and everyone is invited to attend. Rev. Grimsley’s dream of a Baptist witness in the county seat is still alive and well.
The monument that stands jn the side yard of the church was erected in honor of Rev. Grimsley and his wife, Ruth. Unfortunately, Rev. Grimsley’s voice failed him before he could preach to the newly constituted congregation at Washington. The church
