About 80 persons visited the five homes and gardens on the Home and Garden Tour, sponsored by the Rappahannock Garden Club May 19. Fine weather prevailed and cloudiness did not mar the pleasure of the visitors in seeing the homes and gardens in this first tour of its kind ever held in the county, under the theme: “Life in Early Rappahannock.” County Chief Forest Warden Raymond M. Johnson stated that eight forest fires destroying or damaging 243 acres of mature and immature timber burned in Rappahannock County during the months of January through April this year. Many high danger burning days occurred during January and February of this year and also during the extreme dry weather of April, which explains the numerous fires to date. In 1949 there were no fires in the county during the months of January and February. Keeping those shoulders up is a never-ending and costly operation for State Highway Department in Rappahannock County. Figures released by the highway department this week showed that on the secondary roads of the county exactly $1,504.21 was expended for shoulder and ditch work during the past fiscal year.

An awards banquet recognizing Rappahannock County High school students who have participated in and excelled in sports during the 1974-75 sessions was held Tuesday evening. Bill Taylor of Sperryville, outstanding in many categories, appeared pleased with his lot. He received the Sportsmanship award which speaks for itself and won the Most Valuable Player award in cross country and track. The girls with winning ways at the Sports Awards Banquet Tuesday included Katie Pendleton, best Track participant; Margaret Jett, Best in Field events; Mollie Dennis, Most Valuable Varsity basketball play
