Sheriff seeks
pay supplement
for deputies

Sheriff Larry Sherertz presented the Board of Supervisors with a plan for supplementing deputies’ salaries at Monday’s FY 2001 Budget Work Session. The salaries for sheriff's deputies and other constitutional officers are set by Virginia’s Compensation Board and, according to Sheriff Sherertz, are not sufficient to retain deputies and have resulted in “economic flight.” Over the past four years, he told the Board of Supervisors, eighteen employees have been lost— "most for economic reasons.”
Other jurisdictions in the area have taken to supplementing deputies’ pay in order to retain them.
Madison County, the Sheriff reported, is in the process of evaluating a plan, proffered by its Board of Supervisors, that provides salary enhancements starting at $3600 per year for deputies with up to five years of service.
The Compensation Board pay plan for law enforcement officers shows a Step 1 salary of $22,595, or"' approximately $10.86 per hour for a 2080 hour work year. It is the Sheriff’s contention that this is not adequate compensation for the efforts put forth by the deputies, and he proposed to supplement the compensation by providing holiday pay in lieu of “comp time” for holidays worked, and by providing a supplemental stipend of $1200 per year to each deputy.
