The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, in cooperation with the Virginia Resources Authority, announced a new low interest loan program for agricultural producers to install specific conservation practices on their farm. Known as the Virginia Agricultural BMP Loan Program, it will expand the activities of the Virginia Water Facilities Revolving Fund. The purpose of the program is to encourage the use of specific Best Management Practices (BMP’s) that reduce or eliminate the impact of agricultural non point source pollution on Virginia waters. Non point source pollution is any form of pollution that does not come directly out of a pipe or point source.
According to Brad White, Conservation Specialist with the Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District, this program is an excellent opportunity for people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford the cost of installing BMP’s to conserve the resources of their land. “Some of the practices we deal with cost over $100,000.
