History
Built in 1745 by Francis Thornton for his son William, the main house at Montpelier •’ was once the centerpiece of a '"‘v 40,000 acre land grant given by Lord Fairfax. . 4;
Build of brick and stone and covered with stucco, the house is immense — over 110 feet long, but only one room wide on all three floors. The interior features a central /■■? hall plan with four rooms on > each floor. The fine woodwork found throughout the house is ® Virginia heart pine, and there f are many other interesting architectural elements. ?
