The Board of Supervisors decided once again not to fund various social service agencies that regularly request money from the county. After presentations at Monday evening’s work session by representatives from FORE, the sheltered workshop in Remington, and Legal services, the supervisors debated cutting the contribution to the Community Services Board and trying to spread the money among some of those agencies, but weren’t able to reach a consensus, and decided to leave the Community Services Board alone and cut the others. More than 60 volunteers representing 32 organizations attended the annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner held May 14 at Washington’s fire hall. The dinner was sponsored by the Extension Service, the county’s Extension Homemakers and the Volunteer Services program of the Community Services Center. In a photograph, marking the location of the first Roman Catholic Church to be built in Rappahannock County, on U.S. 211, just west of Washington, is a sign erected by a group of parishioners led by Father Albert Verbeke. Assisting with the sign were Tom Junk and Ted Chapman. Four roads that wind through the countryside of Rappahannock County have been designated Virginia Byways by the Commonwealth Transportation Board. The new byways include Fodderstack Road (Route 628, 606 and 641) between historic Washington and Flint Hill and Route 647 between Flint Hill and Route 637 at the Rappahannock-Fauquier county lines.
