At its FY2000 payout meeting on June 29, the Rappahannock County School Board accepted Superintendent David Gangel’s recommendation and approved end-of-year payments of $377,179.10, resulting in a return to the Board of Supervisors of $115,688.03 in unexpended funds. This year’s return represents 1.4 percent of the roughly $8 million in revenue received by the school system.
The end-of-year list includes a broad variety of items, as does the rationale for them. Dr. Gangel explained to the Board that there has been a misunderstanding of just what the end-of-year list represents. “We incur costs right up to June 30,” he said, “and the payout meeting is to take care of bills through that period.”
The approved payment list includes: $129,664 for renovation of the old butterfly roof at the high school, $31,712 for the middle west wing roof at the high school, $29,170 for a new bus chassis, $33,119 for classroom dividers in the new high school addition, $12,000 in cafeteria start-up funds, $5,000 for Germana auto mechanics start-up, $6,750 for 25 person attendance to the Effective Schools Conference, $9,362 for curriculum design software, $7,300 for new band instruments, and $6,020 for an RCHS library computer projector.
Elementary School to
close for repairs
-Dr. Gangel reported that he would be forced to close the elementary school, and might have to suspend summer school if an alternate location can not be identified. It appears as though the liner in the septic lagoon at RCES is accumulating a substrate of an unidentified gas, and the gas is creating a bubble in the liner that is making routine drainage of under-liner water impossible.
