Not all of you may know the Starfish background. In 1998 a charter class of 14 potential mentors began a training program under the expert guidance of Lois Manookian, Judy Tole, Mary O’Meara and Ellen Neill-Dore. Good advice and insights were also contributed by Mary Anne Biggs, Susan Fox and other professionals. Months of thoughtful planning, research and study of mentoring programs from other areas went into the development of Starfish goals and guidelines produced by the executive committee.
The concept of “mentoring” is not a new one in the evolution of human education through the ages. Most of what we know as adults has come from someone’s initiative and desire to transfer knowledge from one to another. But the fresh idea of Starfish has rekindled our enthusiasm.
