returned to Fort Wayne and took a job at the Gazette as a feature writer.
A chance visit by a mqn from NBC news offering him work in television led Scherer to move to Washington in 1947 where he joined the bureau as a news writer, quickly advancing to the number two position at the White House.
Although Washington was his first love, Scherer took the post of NBC London Correspondent in 1969, where he spent four years covering Europe. Upon his return, he was quickly immersed in coverage of the Watergate scandal.
Soon after, RCA —the parent company of NBC—offered Scherer the post of vice president, Washington. He served in that capacity until his retirement in 1986. During the last decade, Scherer spent time at his bucolic country retreat in Rappahanock County, where he put in a pond and enjoyed fishing, entertaining journalist friends, family and. a parade of pets. With his shock of white hair, he was a familiar figure at flea markets and country picnics. He also continued to write, and traveled extensively- lyHe

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Barbara, a daughter Nancy of St. Paul, Minnesota, son David of Washington and two grandsons.
