Chickadees also occupied the nest boxes. Their mossand-fur nests were as important to the research project as the neat grassy nests of bluebirds.
House sparrows were a big problem, and their nests (with eggs and young) were removed. Competition for nest cavities by these introduced and aggressive birds has been — and still is — a serious threat to bluebird populations.
On a number of occasions, I found dead female bluebirds in the nest box; they died of multiple pecks from house sparrows. Once, as I approached a nest box containing bluebird young, a female house sparrow emerged with a nestling bluebird, dropped it on the ground, flew down and pecked through its skull.
