Butterfly count
slated for July 9
If butterflies make your heart flutter, you might enjoy taking part in the fourth annual Shenandoah National Park, Luray area butterfly count on Sunday, July 9. Volunteers will identify and count butterflies within a 15-mile circle centered on Hershberger Hill between Luray and Stanley. The circle extends from the Shenandoah River to Rapidan Camp in Shenandoah National Park. The count is sponsored by the Park, the Shenandoah Natural History Association and the Northern American Butterfly Association. Charge is $3 per person for those over age 12 to defray expense of publishing the annual count report. Garden Watchers do not pay the fee. Last year, participants counted 5,570 butterflies of 56 species. For more information call 540-999-3282.
