Io say the least, there is great uncertainty surrounding the fact of life known as death. This leads some to entertain the notion that immortality would be preferable. If nature has taught us anything, though, it is that the physical world lives in need of constant replenishing. There is a constant cycle by which the old is replaced by the new. The end result is renewed vitality. Certainly, there would be an overall loss of vitality without this renewal. This applies to the world of ideas, as well as to the physical world. As British novelist Susan Ertz dryly observed, “Millions long for immortality who do not know what to do with themselves on a rainy Sunday afternoon.”
