whether or not it was a snake or raccoon. This was not difficult, as snakes leave a nest intact when removing its contents.

It was in observing the response of nesting bluebirds to my periodic checking of boxes that I became aware of the variety of responses of bluebirds to a predator. Of course, I didn’t think of myself as a predator, but bluebirds did, one male bluebird in particular.

At one nest box, the male protested my presence at his nest by diving straight at my head at high speed, all the time clicking his bill in a menacing manner. Though the bird never actually struck me, I instinctively ducked at each dive. The incubating female had flown from the box at my approach. That male bluebird attacked every time I opened the top to his nest box.
