ease that infected the trees back during the bloom period. Pruning out dead branches is the only option now. Apple trees with yellow spotting on the foliage have cedar apple rust. A light infection will not hurt anything, but heavy infection can cause partial defoliation and affect fruit quality. Apples with orange, powdery spores on the fruit have quince rust, a close relative of cedar apple rust. Both rusts have cedar trees as an alternate host and the infection period took over a month ago.
Spraying for the rust diseases must be done on a preventative basis before, during and immediately after the bloom period. There is nothing that can be done now. Peaches often rot on the tree just before they ripen. This is caused by a fungus known as brown rot. Sanitation helps, but fungicides applied three weeks and one week before harvest are often needed if disease pressure is high. Captan, 3336 WP, and Immunox are effective fungicides. Captan is contained in most of the premixed home orchard sprays sold for homeowners. Organic gardeners can get good control with sulfur.
