During the very rainy past several weeks we’ve watched more than a few movies and here’s what we thought about some of them.
• Sweet & Lowdown: PG 13, 1999, 95 minutes. Written and directed by the infamous Woody Allen, this film focuses on the brief but tumultuous ; career of 1930’s jazz guitarist Emmet Ray (played exceptionally well by Sean Penn). His ;fame a mere flash in the pan, some of Ray’s recorded hits were “Melancholy Baby”, “See you in My Dreams”, and “Exactly Like You”. ! The extraordinarily gifted [musician was a drunk, obnoxious, flamboyant gambler and < womanizer, whose idea of a .’ date was shooting rats at the dump and a roll in the hay. Ray also had a small problem ;with kleptomania, and meets ; his wife (played by Uma I Thurman) when she catches [him in the act. One of the ; great performance scenes is where he envisions himself gliding down to the stage atop ■ a crescent moon, but his [ drunkenness, as well as engi[ neering problems, pose signifi• cant difficulties.
