Behavior in the eastern bluebird, Sialia Sialis, is wildly diverse. It was in observing a bluebird’s reaction to predation that I began to understand this diversity.
As resident naturalist at the Madeira School in McLean, with its 400 varied acres, it was my job to monitor 35 bluebird nest boxes every two weeks and record what I found. If a bluebird was nesting, the number of eggs was recorded, and if there was young, their number and approximate ages were important.
There were other occupants than bluebirds: bumble bees and wasps, for example. I had to be careful in removing these and did get painful stings on several occasions. That was all a part of my job, an occupational hazard.
