I would like to respond to Lee Bird's latest
letter to the editor.
While I disagree with Mr. Bird’s application of scripture in his response to my letter, I will defend to the death his right to quote scripture. This great nation was founded by men dedicated to the proposition that we should all be free to follow our individual conscience without being subjected to the autocratic domination of a monarch or his appointed religious leader.
The first President of the United States, George Washington, did not want to, be President. He had led his countrymen in a war for freedom to shed the shackles of the British monarch. He did not want to be President for fear that people would think of • him as their king, the very principle that he had fought to free us from.
Religious - and thus political - freedom was a principle espoused by men who had fled religious and political persecution in Europe.
