This took several days and hot sun, as you dried them on a roof on a white sheet taking them in every night, until they were completely dry, they were stored in a white sack for use throughout the winter. Some were also sold for extra income.
The unusual thing about dried apples or "snits" was you did not cook many at a time because when the water was added they would double in size. You could end up with more apples than were needed. We also ate them for snacks as they were soft and chewy.
The fallen apples were picked up and used for cider.
