Golf
The highlight of the week was the performance of Michael Fairbrother at the District Golf Tournament in Luray on Tuesday, Sept. 26.
Michael and fellow teammate, James Wines, represented RCHS in the Bull Run District tournament held at the Bowling Green Country Club. Michael shot an 84 for eighteen holes which tied him with two other golfers for first place.
In the playoff competition, Michael ended up in second place. His performance earned him a berth in this week's Regional Golf Tournament to be held in Waynesboro on Wednesday, Oct. 5.
Girls Basketball
The Lady Panthers had two games this past week. On Tuesday, Sept. 26 the Lady Mountaineers from Madison County came to town. The junior varsity game exposed the Lady Panthers inexperience as they lost 44-14. With seven sophomores on the Madison JV team and none on the Rappahannock squad, the outcome was clear early on. However, Laura Maloney played very well in the loss and led the squad with her season high seven points.
The Varsity game saw the Lady Panthers unable to get anything going offensively. Madison played an aggressive zone defensive that continuously collapsed on the Panther s, Amanda Weakley, and limited her to only three points all night. Without their big inside scorer and with a poor night of outside shooting, the Lady Panthers had a meager 22 points, their lowest offensive output of the year. Gwen Johnson led the team contributing 12 points in the losing effort.
On Thursday, Sept. 28, the Page County Lady Panthers came to play our own Lady Panthers in a non-district game. The RCHS girls lost 4417 and could never catch up after falling behind 16-4 in the first quarter. Lara Kreyling had five points to lead the JV squad.
"We lost to Page at Page 67-6 the second game of the year, considering our first game with them was just over a month ago, and the fact that we played them even 9-9 in the fourth quarter tonight, I guess you could say that we have come a long way." said Coach Smythe after the game.
The Varsity game was a real cat fight as both sets of Lady Panthers battled on the court. The RCHS played great in the first half and went into the intermission holding a 2524 lead. However, the Page Panthers charged out in the second half and led by senior forward Megan Tate's ten points in the third quarter, took the lead and never looked back. The game ended with Pages' Lady Panthers as the 55-39 victor.
Amanda Weakley led the RCHS squad with 12 points and Gwen Johnson added nine points for the night. During the intermission, Coach Michael Dayton told the girls at half time, "It was a good first half, but we've got to go out and win the third quarter to come out on top." Unable to accomplish that, the Lady Panthers look to Manassas Park on Oct. 3 for their first victory.
Cross Country
The RCHS Cross Country team was in action on Wednesday, Sept. 27 for their second home meet at the Bleu Rock Inn course. The George Mason Mustangs came to the
