We in Rappahannock are blessed to have had Jeff MacNelly as a friend and neighbor, to see him dining at 4 & 20 Blackbirds, whose walls display MacNelly cartoons, or sharing his talents with students in the schools and at the Middle Street Gallery. His community spirit was invaluable to many local organizations for whom he produced mascots and | emblems and supported with his time, energy and generosity.
The John Sawhill Environmental Award will be given to a student or teacher in the Rappahannock School system who exhibits particular interest in or service to our local environment.
John Sawhill was known to his Rappahannock County neighbors as the President of the Nature Conservancy, the world's largest conservation group, dedicated to preserving endangered environment from development. In the 10 years he served the Nature Conservancy more than 7 million acres in the United States came under protection.
Mr. Sawhill was first and last an educator. He was formerly a professor of economics and j President of New York University during the 1970's. He served as deputy energy director 1 and administrator in the Federal Energy ,
