Neglected starling and House Sparrow infested martin houses can be found in backyards everywhere and are a sad testimonial to the once hardy population of martins. This is unfortunate because martins are a beautiful, graceful bird that is now very scarce or absent from large expanses of their former range.
You can help Purple Martins establish themselves at your site by taking steps to manage your housing and control the starlings and English Sparrows from breeding in your "martin-less" house. If you are willing to continuously evict starlings and House Sparrows by lowering your housing when needed and removing their nest or trapping them your chances of success will greatly increase.
Shooting these "pests" is also an option and is legal, but only recommended when your housing is in an area that allows this to safely be done.
