Did you hear on the news this week that we should take time to look at the sky? If you did you would have seen the faint lights of the auroras.
As I looked into the sky this past Friday night, Nov. 10, the moon was full with white puffy clouds that reflected the faint colors of the rainbow around it. The auroras lights occur around the earth's north and south poles. The southern auroras are called Aurora-Australis, and the north ones are called Aurora-borealis. As a child growing up, I often heard them referred to as the Northern Lights. The aurora is higher in the atmosphere than the highest jet flies. Only the astronauts can fly through the auroras.
I remember hearing a story about a time in the 1940’s when the aurora lights were bright and flashing in the sky here in the county. It was such a rare occurrence to see such a spectacular view of bright lights at night that it scared some of the local residents. At that time science was not as sophisticated.
