Alzheimer’s disease is a devastating disease that robs millions of their memories, independence and ultimately, their lives. As Americans are living longer, age-related diseases are becoming more common. It’s estimated that unless a cure is found, nearly 14 million people in the United States will have Alzheimer’s disease within the next 50 years.
There is no telling how long Alzheimer’s disease has been affecting mankind. Not until recently was it recognized as dementia, which had its own stigma. When the Alzheimer’s Association formed 20 years ago, national attention was finally paid to the disease and the research being done to determine its causes, treatments and prevention.
