After 8 years without hosting martins at our site due to starling and House Sparrow infestation I talked with several people that were having success at their site. I explained our infestation problem and was told that if hawks, crows, bluejays, etc., happen to take one of "my" martins then this is nature in action and part of the food chain.
Starlings and House sparrows on the other hand, do not kill for food and their actions are not consistent to nature's food chain. I can’t say for sure, but it appears sparrows kill for no other reason than to continue their quest to take over the bird world.
Since we started pest control at our site we have experienced great success. We hosted two pair of Purple Martins five years ago and since then our colony has grown each year and numbered nearly 35 pair this year. So choose the method that is effective for you.
