loday, new diagnostic tools make it possible to obtain a diagnosis of probable Alzheimer’s with an accuracy of about 90 percent. Scientists continue to reach new, more effective tests to diagnose the disease in its early stages. An accurate, early diagnosis gives affected individuals a greater change of benefiting from existing treatments.
Researchers are studying dozens of compounds in the search for medications to treat symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Several experimental drugs have begun to show promise in enhancing nerve cell communications, regulating defective cell processes, protecting nerve cells from damage brought on by Alzheimer’s and repairing nerve cells in the brain.
To date there are three FDAapproved drugs for treatment of Alzheimer’s disease — tacrine (Cognex®), donepezil (Aricept®) and rivastigmine (Exelon®) — and several others in clinical trials. Another drug, galantamine (Reminyl®) is under review by the FDA.
Although today’s treatments provide only symptomatic relief, the next generation of treatments may delay onset or slow progression by protecting nerve cells for longer periods of time.
