An Alzheimer’s Vaccine?

Initial results of a phase I clinical trial of a potential vaccine for people with Alzheimer’s disease have shown that the vaccine is safe and well tolerated in humans, according to scientists at Elan Corporation.
In their animal research, scientists identified how the vaccine works to clear plaques, or protein deposits, out of the brain. The scientists reported their study results last July at the World Alzheimer’s Congress in Washington, DC.
Pending approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for testing, the vaccine will first be evaluated for safety in a small group of individuals. If it proves to be safe to use in humans, larger clinical studies could begin some time next year.
“This is an exciting and encouraging study for the prevention and possible treatment of Alzheimer’s disease,” says William Thies, Ph.D., vice president of medical and scientific affairs at the Alzheimer’s Association. “Scientists now have an opportunity to test this theory and begin unlocking the mystery behind this devastating disease.”
