Rappahannock County High School celebrated Veterans Day last Friday. Students and county citizens commemorated those who serve their country with a program of patriotic music, a video from the Department of Veterans Affairs featuring Jennifer Love Hewitt who shared her thoughts on the meaning of service, and a keynote address by RCHS alumnus, U.S. Army Captain Philip Daczewitz.
Daczewitz served m Iraq with the Army Corps of Engineers. He spoke with feeling about his work over there building bridges and about friends he has lost and friends he has seen wounded, and the meaning Veterans Day has for him as a soldier: “It’s about what’s going on right now. As a high school, as a community, how do we support our soldiers. Again, I am not here to fight the political fight. I’m asking, whether you believe in the war, the fight, or not, to continue to support our troops who are laying down their fives over there every day.”
