Last estimate there are more than 900,000 deer in the State of Virginia. November is the height of their mating season so they are even more rambunctious than normal and oftentimes more aggressive. In addition to feeling their oats, they seem to have become fearless when it comes to dealing with us humans. They are no longer very shy. Take precautions when driving particularly at night. Slow down, brake gently and be on the lookout for them. Rifle season starts this weekend and some of their numbers will undoubtedly be reduced. There are bow hunters out there as well. As development continues to encroach on their habitats in Northern Virginia, more and more of them are seeking refuge in the rural countryside of Rappahannock County. The hills are alive with the sound of rutting.

Feasting is fun even with the foibles. Sometimes the stress of trying to please everyone is too much and family get-togethers can be anything but congenial. But, when all is said is done, love for one’s family tends to be unconditional and there are usually certain friends, relatives, spouses, children or familiar culinary dishes that come to mind at Thanksgiving and spark fume or fancy.
