but, for the life of me, I can’t figure how it is supposed to be spelled.

It always seemed to me that two of the , measures used to determine if a country family had a good year were first, the amount of lard you made at hog killing time, and second, the number of bushels of potatoes you had dug and stored for the winter.

And, then, Granddaddy would come back a few days after hog killing for a big chitlin (chitterlings) supper. He and my Dad loved these things. My Mom fixed them for them, but like me, she didn’t eat them. I think I probably had bread and butter and applesauce and went to bed, thinking about breakfast.
