White-throated sparrows are especially noticeable now and they’re easy to recognize. Males and females are similar in appearance and fairly handsome for sparrows. Each has a distinctive white throat patch, of course, and a crown striped with either black and white or brown and tan. There is also a conspicuous' yellow spot between eye and bill, and two white wing bars.
These birds are active and gregarious, and not overly shy of people. They congregate in sizable mixed winter flocks that move about over large areas. We see them nearly everyday around our house and under feeders. We also see them flitting around in nearby shrubs and scratching on the ground for seeds and bugs.
