Isaac Raney made a state-ment Saturday night. He is a wrestling champion.
“I wasn’t really scared. I was pretty pumped,” said Raney, who, with.his 7-3 win over Northwood’s Carlos Brown, became Rappahannock County High School’s first-ever state wrestling champion. “I gave it my all out there.”
The Panthers had an exceptional showing at the two-day. Group A State Wrestling Ibumament at the Salem Civic Center. Besides gamering a state championship from Raney, fellow seniors Dos Allen and Alex Sharp placed in their respective weight classes.
Allen, a state runnerup as a junior, finished second at 145 pounds in one of the most controversial matches of the tournament. Sharp took eighth place at 140 pounds.
As a team, Rappahannock finished 11th in the standings. Manassas Park, led by four-time state champion Tbdd Smoot, capped its season with its third consecutive team state title. The Cougars amassed 181 points.
“Like I said before, I’m very proud of what they have accomplished,” Rappahannock head coach Jim Herzog said.
Raney took an unusual road to reach the championship final. A nonmeat eater, Raney said that he had difficulty keeping up his strength during the Bull Rim District and Region B tournaments. The lack of proper nutrition may have triggered a poorer showing in the earlier tournaments - Raney finished fourth in his weight class at the district meet and third in the regional competition.
“It was hard to get protein into me,” he added, “and at districts and regionals, I didn’t wrestle well at all.” ,
