Champion 2-year-old of 1980, Lord Avie has thrown a number of quality steeplechasers in addition to Lord Kenneth, including grade I hurdler Lord Zada and stakes-placed timber winner Floating Interest. Morris knows, and likes, the type: tall, strong, smart, athletic, fast. Just what it takes to be tops over timber.
When he had a chance to purchase one of the stallion’s more modest sons, a leggy bay 1998 model named No Fast Moves, Morris ... well, jumped at the chance. Though the horse had shown only glimpses of talent racing on the flat — a single victory from 30 starts — Morris looked harder at the individual, and the record. All but three of the horse’s starts were on the turf; and No Fast Moves broke his maiden at Churchill Downs over a mile and a 16th, telling of the gelding’s proclivity as a router.
