Herzog also said that Raney operated at a disadvantage throughout the season. Because he joined the team in January, he was not given the weight allowance that others enjoy. Most of his opponents could wrestle at 163 pounds. Raney could not weigh more than 161 pounds when he stepped on the mat.
Things changed for Raney, however, before the state tournament. Allen said that his parents talked with Raney about his diet and gave him a list of specific foods that he should eat prior to the state tournament.
