Planting Ideas
When planting trees this spring, it is not necessary to stake or guy the plant unless it is in a very exposed site or if the root ball is not sufficient to support the tree. Research shows that staking actually slows establishment of the root system following planting. Staking also inhibits diameter growth of the stem. If stakes or guys are necessary to support the tree, these supports usually should be removed after one growing season.
Pruning these new trees will help ensure the trees develop good form and structure. Look for conflicting branches and co-dominant limbs. Do not remove too many low limbs, at least two thirds of the trees height should have branches. Removing too many lower limbs can also affect diameter growth.
