Bom in 1934, Estes has been both an observer and a participant in all the changes and events that have come to pass in Rappahannock over the years. Estes’ great-grandfather, Christopher Columbus Estes, served in the Confederate Infantry and Cavalry and gave his live at the Battle of Cedarville.
His grandfather and father farmed and milled lumber.
The Estes sawmill was up on Piney Run before it became part of Shenandoah National Park. Estes recalled, “My grandfather had land up there, and they were going to take it for three dollars an acre or so, you know- just a pittance.” Before selling it under duress, Estes’ grandfather and father began milling the lumber on the land. “They went, up there and they cut all the locust posts and they cut all the stave wood
