Global warming and the ongoing reckless treatment of the planet have already resulted in disaster. Think of the thousands lost in Katrina, and the recent mud slide. Why can’t we stop abusing the plant? In large part it is because the invisible hand of the economy forces us to keep creating goods and services, (displacing the natural world) even when they are not needed by people. (It is the system that needs expansion in order to work. It is not primarily the peoples needs, that drive this expansion) I know politicians love to say development and environmental conservation do not conflict, but this is nonsense. Every economic activity has an environmental toll; the displacement of more fields or woods or natural habitats by more buildings and roads, the use of energy, the traffic to get there, the heating and cooling of the building, the by products which are wasted etc. We have to much economic activity for the planet to survive. And indeed, all people could live comfortably in a stable economy if we altered the growth-inducing parameters of
