Senior Isaac Raney pulled off a surprise Saturday in Salem in winning the state title at 160 pounds, after finishing fourth in the district and third in regionals. Sophomore Andrew Lee took sixth in the district at 112 pounds. Freshman Jeremy Diley was third in the district tournament at 275 pounds, while fellow freshman Tyler Armor finished fourth in the district tournament at 103.
An emotional Rhonda Jenkins pointed out that her girls varsity basketball team found plenty of reasons to celebrate its season, including five victories.
But moreover, Jenkins shared her personal story, a bout with breast cancer that sidelined her a year ago.
“I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to coach again,” she told the audience.
Jenkins thanked Rappahannock athletic director J.D. Almond and assistant principal Mike Tupper for giving her another opportunity to work with the basketball program. Then, she awarded sophomore Noel Johns MVP honors. Johns averaged more than 11 points per game for the Lady Panthers and also garnered second team, all-district recognition.
Sophomore Kim Hutchinson won the Coach’s Award. Jenkins also gave game balls to senior Courtney Hutchinson and Lina Golle.
