The “Brilliance of the Baroque” concert at the Theatre at Washington, Virginia on Saturday, March 18 will end this fourteenth season in the Smithsonian at Little Washington series. The concert will feature the music of the great French baroque composer Marin Marais.
Earlier this year, the Theatre celebrated the 250th anniversary of the birth of Mozart. But Mozart is not the only composer with a big anniversary this year; 2006 also marks the 350th anniversary of the birth of Marin Marais. The Theatre welcomes the opportunity to share in the celebration with five members of the Smithsonian Chamber Players.
Marais was a virtuoso on the viola da gamba, for which he wrote more than 600 pieces. A selection from these “Pieces de viole,” or pieces for viol (viola da gamba) will be performed by Kenneth Slowik, accompanied by harpsichordist James Weaver and theorbo (bass lute) player Lucas Harris, each of whom will also play a solo work from the French baroque for his instrument. Slowik, Weaver and Harris, and their outstanding international reputations, are all well known to Theatre audiences.
