The record does not always tell the full story.
Take the Rappahannock County High School wrestling team as the example.
There were only six wrestlers, but in this case, quality meant more than quantity.
“Every single second on the mat is like one minute of a football game,” Rappahannock head wrestling coach Jim Herzog told the audience at Wednesday night’s winter Athletic Awards Night in the school’s auditorium. “It’s six full minutes (per match). We don’t have a lot of wrestlers, but we’re working hard to build this program here.”
Then, Herzog handed out his Most Valuable Wrestler award to senior Dos Allen, who has been one of the cornerstones of Rappahannock’s wrestling program. Allen finished second in the Group A state tournament in a controversial overtime loss at 145 pounds. A winner of more than 100 matches in his career, Allen earlier won the Bull Run District and Region B titles.
“Dos just puts it on the mat,” Herzog added.
Fellow senior Alex Sharp walked away with the Coach’s Award. Sharp won his district title at 140 pounds, finished third in the regional tournament and took eighth at states.
Herzog’s other four wrestlers also had standout seasons.
