Speeding motorists have long been a problem in the Town of Washington. The speed limit on the town’s roads is 25 miles per hour, but that rule is often broken, especially by drivers passing through Washington on Fodderstack Road and Main Street.
The ongoing safety issue led to a discussion at the Town Council’s meeting on July 11 about how to curb speeding in Washington.
Town Planning Commission Chairman Gary Schwartz raised the issue during the public forum portion of the dj£eting.
“It’s a serious -issue,” Council Member Claudia Mitchell agreed.
Mitchell said that with three people running for county sheriff in this November’s election, it is a good time to make the next sheriff aware of the problem before he or she takes office.
Schwartz asked town leaders to request that the Rappahannock County Sheriffs Office put a sign that measures and displays drivers’ speeds on Main Street to get drivers
