Vaccinations
All students entering sixth grade are required by Virginia law to receive a Tdap vaccination before the first day of school this fall.
Tdap is a tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (better known as whooping cough) vaccine. Most are familiar with the vaccine Td (tetanus diphtheria), which is recommended every 10 years. The Tdap replaces one dose of Td.
Sixth-graders, 10 years of age and older, may receive Tdap at their doctor’s office, military base or their local health department. Tdap may be given if it has been five years since the last tetanus-containing vaccination. Tdap vaccine is given free or charge at all local heath departments.
The Rappahannock County Health Department will be offering Tdap vaccinations at all immunization clinics. Call the department at 540-675-3516 for clinic times.
