bill. While a special legislative session to address the situation is unlikely, Rust said it was probable that the issue will be revisited in the 2008 General Assembly session.
Changes may include eliminating stiff punishments for lesser driving offenses. Rust added that lawyers may also tinker with the element of the bill that restricts the penalties only to Virginians, exploring ways of making those fines apply to outof-state drivers as well.
Bob Chase, president of the Northern Virginia Transportation Alliance, said it makes perfect sense to penalize drivers who tie up the roads with accidents and other infractions.
Tm not sure the principle of charging people more who are excessively abusive of traffic laws is wrong,” Chase said.
As for Ault and his petition, he said that, ultimately, his intent is to send it to members of the General Assembly.
“It just shows how strongly people feel about this here in Virginia,” he said.
