Tens of thousands of Virginians have already signed their names to an online petition started last week to protest steep new fines on drivers, and lawmakers said changes may be craning as a result.

Bryan Ault, a software tester who lives in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County, started the petition on July 6 in response to what he calls “egregious” fines levied against drivers for serious offenses. Those fines went into effect July 1, as a result of the state’s new transportation bill passed by the General Assembly this year.
