High on the Hog
proprietor has new
venture in Madison

A Rappahannock County restaurateur is carving out a new niche at a winery in neighboring Madison County.
J.D. Hartman has combined his ove for barbecue with vintages from lis Christensen Ridge Winery in a package he calls Wine and Swine.
Rappahannock residents may ■emember Hartman's smoked barbecue from his High on the Hog [restaurant. In the mid-1990s, High on the Hog was a fixture across U.S. 211 from the Oldway Art Center west of Sperryville.
Hartman has had ventures in Front Royal, Gainesville and Warrenton since then, but he still lives in Rappahannock with his wife, Debbie, and their three children.
Hartman bought the 209-acre Christensen Ridge two years ago and opened the winery's tasting room in September.
"Out in California right now, the big thing is barbecue and wine," he said. "It makes sense: spicy food and wine."
