The Board of Supervisors has approved the creation of a study group to look at the internet needs of the county.. .a direct outcome of the Living Tbwns workshop Both Chris rhompson, a policy analyst at the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development, and Joel Garreau, author, Washington Post columnist and keynote speaker, had stressed at the Living 'towns meeting that high-speed, reliable and affordable broadband Internet connections are one of the key factors that will determine the fate and fortune of Virginia s rural communities.
If Rappahannock wants to increase its tax base by attracting small, non-polluting businesses, broadband is a necessity. If Rappahannock wants to encourage professionals who will bring, and continue to operate, their home-based businesses, they often need broadband to handle their data volume.
These businesses bring income to tradespersons because they need support to renovate houses, upgrade or fix plumbing and electrical, cut trees, deliver fire wood, design and upkeep gardens, clean houses, mow lawns, plow driveways, repair computers, etc. In addition they will shop at local farms, roadside stands, shops and eat at restaurants.
This is a demographic population that traditionally does not stress County services, and, if history is prologue to the future, will donate many hours of volunteer time to improve the community. The BOS is to be commended for moving forward to plan for meeting the needs of our community.
