Maj. Chris Williams said Tuesday that the sheriff’s office purchased one of the machines from Culpeper County, but has been waiting several weeks for Culpeper authorities to sign the title so it can be properly registered for Rappahannock’s use.
When the machine is available, Williams said, Rappahannock residents can request that it be placed in a certain location. He said the sheriff’s office will also be setting it up ip several areas of the county.
Williams said the machines are helpful, but it’s questionable to what extent.
“It certainly doesn’t hurt, but I don’t know how effective it is,” he said. “It would certainly make [drivers] aware of their speed if they weren’t aware.”
Williams said the sheriff’s office has been stepping up speed-limit enforcement recently and has issued several tickets in the Washington area.
