Independence Day celebration complete with fireworks and a trip to the historic St. John’s Church, where Patrick Henry made his famous speech. The group also attended several plays performed by traveling drama groups.
Massie, a rising junior, focused her studies on the humanities, taking a class that explored lines in society that are drawn between acceptable and unacceptable things. She also took a literary class named “Subtext and Double Speak.”
Massie noted that she read a lot of smaller works of literature such as essays and poems, and even wrote some of her own material in a creative writing class. “It was nice getting feedback from teachers,” she said, “I think I definitely improved my writing.”
Osha Kondori, a rising senior also participated in the humanities program. Among the classes she attended was a class entitled “Poets and Rebels and Crazies” and a class on classic propaganda.
“The classes were very open and interesting,” she said, “They definitely understand that you are giving up your summer, so they let you take a role in the classes and try to keep you entertained.”
