Several weeks ago, in the daily paper, there was an article about the prevalence of black bears, and one of the items caught my eye. It said that it was a myth that black bears would protect their young, that that was a trait of brown bears and grizzly bears. I couldn’t believe what I was reading.
We have a mockingbird in a morning glory bush that will send you scurrying back into the house when you get too close to her nest. Except, possibly, for rattlesnakes and copperheads, I don’t know of any animal that won’t protect its young. You can believe it is a myth if you like, but you do that at your own peril.
Be careful with these bears, my friends. I do not believe you should treat them as big, furry friends who will do you no harm. I don’t know what the answer is, and some of my more genteel friends will get upset if I suggest we eat more bear meat. It really is pretty good. And it makes wonderful salami. My son even makes a great “three critter stew.” Be careful out there.
