Group to look
for funding
solutions

A new group is forming in an attempt to bring in more state funding for Rappahannock County Public Schools.
The Rappahannock County and School Funding Team will work with elected representatives on the state and federal levels as well as selected citizens to increase state funding for Rappahannock’s local government and public schools.
Because of Rappahannock’s low population and lack of large businesses, funding for the county’s government and public schools falls largely on the shoulders of the county’s property owners.
The team will try to soften the blow to local taxpayers by making recommendations to the Board of Supervisors on how to relieve some of that burden.
The group’s name and mission statement were developed by County Administrator John McCarthy and Schools Superintendent Bob Chappell, and will be discussed at the supervisors’ meeting Monday.
An organizational meeting for the new group is scheduled to follow in midAugust.
School funding was a point of heated debate this year as county and school leaders put Rappahannock’s fiscal 2008 budget together.
The county’s schools accounted for nearly 60 percent of Rappahannock’s $20.3 million budget.
The schools’ $12.1 million portion was a $310,000 increase over what the system received for fiscal 2007. The increase required a 1cent property tax increase on each $100 of assessed land value.
