The Trading Post break-in might be part of a pattern of burglaries at other gun stores and pawn shops in the region.
“There are surrounding jurisdictions that are having the same type of breaking and enterings,” Smith said. “We’re all working together to figure out who’s stolen these.”
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is also involved in the investigation.
Carter, who has owned Trading Post since 1994, said there have been two prior attempts to break into the store.
In both instances, burglars tried to force the front door open. Both attempts caused the security alarm to sound, thus notifying the sheriff’s office. But by the time deputies arrived at the scene, the suspects had already fled before entering the store.
Carter said most gun thieves want to get money for drugs. They either plan to use the guns in other crimes or sell the firearms.
Handguns are usually quick, easy sells, he said.
